Why Slow Down SoMa?
The intersection of 15th and Main Street is one of the busiest and most important pedestrian and cycling crossings in SoMa. Families, students, cyclists, and visitors use this stretch daily to dine, shop, and gather. Yet, speeding traffic creates real safety concerns and discourages walking and biking.
That’s why SoMa 501 and the Slow Down SoMa Committee — Heather Davis (AMR), Jack Sundell (The Root), Shelley Green (The Green Corner Store), and Arlton Lowry (Few) — are launching a pop-up traffic calming project during Fiesta en SoMa on October 3.
The project will feature:
A temporary street median, created with large planters, to visually narrow lanes and calm traffic.
Painted bike lanes to improve cyclist safety and visibility.
Beautification with greenery to make the area more inviting for everyone.
Together, these improvements will test strategies that make Main Street safer and more welcoming.
